What is MCP and how does WP AI Builder use it?

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard developed by Anthropic that lets AI assistants connect to external tools and services through a standardised JSON-RPC interface. WP AI Builder implements an MCP server inside your WordPress site. When you configure your AI client (Claude Desktop, Cursor, Windsurf, etc.) to point at that server, the AI can read your page structure, create and update Elementor sections, and verify its own work — all without you writing any code or copying content between tools.

Do I need to know how to code to use WP AI Builder?

No. Once the plugin is installed and your AI client is connected, you communicate in plain language. You tell the AI what you want — ‘Add a three-column benefits section with icons and short descriptions’ — and it builds it in Elementor. The resulting page is made of standard Elementor widgets that you can click and edit in the visual editor just like anything else.

Which AI tools are compatible?

Any AI client that supports the Model Context Protocol works with WP AI Builder. This currently includes Claude Desktop (Anthropic), Cursor, Windsurf, and ChatGPT with MCP support. Because MCP is an open standard, new AI tools that add MCP support will connect automatically without any update to the plugin.

Does it work with the free version of Elementor?

Yes. WP AI Builder is built on Elementor Free and uses only the core widget set: headings, text editors, buttons, icons, icon lists, accordions, and so on. Elementor Pro is not required. If you do have Elementor Pro installed, those additional widgets become available to the AI as well.

What happens if something goes wrong during a build?

WP AI Builder creates a backup of your Elementor page data before every write operation. If you are unhappy with the result, you can restore the previous version from within the plugin’s admin panel. The plugin also verifies its own work after saving — checking that the saved structure matches what was intended — so you know immediately if something did not save correctly.

Is my site data sent to any AI company?

No data from your WordPress site is sent to Anthropic, OpenAI or any other AI provider without you initiating it. When your AI client requests information about your page — for example, the current page outline — that data travels from your WordPress server to your AI client over the MCP connection you configured. The AI provider only receives what your client sends as part of a conversation; WP AI Builder never initiates contact with a third-party AI service.

Can I control which operations the AI is allowed to perform?

Yes. WP AI Builder includes an approval controls system that lets you define which operations require your explicit sign-off before they proceed. For example, you can require approval for any operation that replaces a whole page while allowing smaller edits to run automatically. The settings are per-site and can be changed at any time from the WP AI Builder admin panel.

How do I get started?

Install the WP AI Builder plugin from your WordPress dashboard (it is available in the WordPress plugin directory).
